JOHN ALLIN, A.M., bapt. Colby, Norf., Eng., May 22, 1597, son of Reginald Allin of Colby, Gent.; Gonville & Caius Coll., Camb., A.B., 1616, A.M. 1619; came to N.E. 1637; Ord. Dedham, Apr. 24, 1639, as the first minister; sett. Dedham, 1637-1671; Overseer, H.C., 1654; Artillery Election Sermon, 1664; d. Dedham, Aug. 26, 1671, a. 75. (F.L. Weiss says he was ord. Sept. 20, 1619; Curate at Denton, Norfolk, and at Wrentham, Suffolk, Eng. but an article by Prof. Wm. F. Allen of Madison, WI in English Origins of New England Families, Second Series, Vol. 1 claims that this John Allin was not the minister who was ord. First Pastor of Dedham.
Born in 1596.
Entered the Ministry in England.
Came over in 1637.
The same year joined the company
at Dedham.
Ordained Pastor April 24, 1639..
Died August 27, 1671.
A man of signal worth
Of uneffected piety,
And great sweetness of disposition.
Prudent, meek, patient and serene.
He faithfully fed his flock .
And by his writings and counsels
Obtained a wide-spread reputation ,
And rendered eminent service
To the N.E. Colonies.

Erected in 1854 by residents
within the old territorial Parish.
