Excerpt from the obituary of Elon R. Brown: Elon Galusha Brown was born Nov. 26, 1826, in Lorraine and died Jan. 25, 1871, at the home of his mother in Philadelphia, N. Y. He was a student and acquired an excellent education, being primarily trained in the common schools. At an early age, he began teaching in the country schools, and in the meantime pursued his studies with such diligence that he was called to teach in the Watertown High school, after five years of experience in mixed schools. He was a strict disciplinarian and successful as a teacher. For some years he kept a store at Stone Mills and was subsequently a dealer in butter and cheese at Watertown, removing to that city in 1868, and being fairly successful as a business man. Failing health compelled him to abandon his activities and he passed away at an early age of 53 years. He was a faithful member of the Baptist church, an ardent Republican in political principle, and a firm supporter of the government in the Civil war. His wife, Lucretia Rouse, was a daughter of Daniel C. Rouse.
