Youngest son of William Wall and Susannah Goddard of Prudence Island, part of Portsmouth township in Rhode Island.

William Wall is believed to be the immigrant ancestor of the family. Tradition states he came from Ireland but another source gives England as his origin. Susannah Goddard was the daughter of immigrant Henry Goddard of Jamestown, RI, and Mary Howland d/o Arthur and Elizabeth (Prence) Howland of Marshfield, MA.

After his father's death in 1742, Samuel Wall's mother remarried in 1743 to John Allin of Prudence Island. Samuel may have lived with them or with one of his elder brothers. By 1760, he was of Providence when he was made a freeman of the Colony of Rhode Island. Eventually, however, he settled in Coventry.

Samuel Wall married twice. First to Elizabeth Coggeshall, by whom he had Coggshall Wall (m. Elizabeth Rouse), Hannah wife of Daniel Allin, Samuel Wall (m. Hannah Spencer), Beriah Wall (m. Sarah Comstock), William Wall (m. Polly Greene), Elizabeth wife of John Pearce Allin, and Mary wife of Lowry Arnold. By his second wife, Mary Sheldon, Samuel Wall had a son Sheldon Wall (m. Eunice Capwell), who died in Pennsylvania without issue.
