Born in Richmond, Surrey, he was the elder son of John Mitford (1738-1806) and Mary Allen (1757-1784) and the brother of Robert Mitford (1784-1836). He was best known as a poet, editor and cleric. He graduated B.A. on Dec. 7, 1804 from Oriel College, Oxford. On Dec. 22, 1808, he was ordained as an Anglican priest. He was Vicar at Benhall and nominated to the rectory of Stratford st. Andrew, Suffolk, and then in crown patronage. On Oct. 21, 1814 he married Augusta Boodle (1794-1886) at St. George's, Hanover Square, London. In 1833, he began to contribute a series of articles on the old, English poets to the "Gentleman's Magazine". For Pickering's Aldine edition of the British poets, he edited the memoirs and poems of Thomas Gray, William Cowper, John Milton, John Dryden, Jonathan Swift and Edmund Spenser. He also wrote many newspaper articles on the sport of cricket. He died at Benhall vicarage and was buried at Stratford St. Andrew churchyard.
