On November 18, 1869, Richard married Orry Elizabeth Wood, who was from next door Waseca County. The marriage took place in the city of Waseca. After about a year, the couple bought their own farm in Woodville Township, Waseca County, near the farm of Orry's parents. Richard and Orry had six children, all born in Waseca County. Richard suffered from a congenital heart condition that prevented him from being an active farmer, so he became a stock trader. In 1902, their fourth child, Roy Wood Middaugh, was killed in a train wreck while working as a railroad brakeman. Richard died in Waseca of heart trouble on October 9, 1904 and is buried in the Woodville Cemetery in Waseca. Orry lived as a widow for many years and died in 1936.
