Charlotte, NC - Rev. James McCoy Armstrong, 86, died Sunday, October 22 at Aldersgate United Methodist Retirement Community in Charlotte. After a brief illness, Jim experienced what he often talked about as the "third birth" as he awoke in Heaven. While it was a sad day for his family, "it was dad's best day in a long time."

A celebration of Life service will be held 3:00 pm, Saturday, October 28, at St Stephen United Methodist Church, 6800 Sardis Road, Charlotte, NC 28270. The family invites guests to join them in a meal following the service at the church, for a time of fellowship and telling "Jim" stories.

Born August 23, 1931 in Belmont North Carolina to James Matthew Armstrong and Pearl Moretz Armstrong, Jim Armstrong held an AB degree from Pfeiffer College (University), a BA from Wofford College (University), and a Bachelor of Divinity (Masters) from The Divinity School at Duke University.

An Elder in the Western North Carolina Conference of the United Methodist Church, Jim served churches across Western North Carolina in a career that spanned almost 7 decades. He retired from full time ministry in 1991, but served in retirement for 20 years while living at Lake Junaluska, NC. A special seating area will be reserved for all United Methodist Clergy in attendance at the Celebration of Life Service.

Rev. Armstrong is survived his wife, Margarethe P "Heli" Armstrong of Charlotte, sons Rev. James McCoy "Jamie" Armstrong, Jr and wife Rev. Elizabeth Graves, of Lexington, NC; Timothy Norris Armstrong and wife Faye of Harrisburg, NC; and John Mathew "Hans" Armstrong of Cornelius, NC: and four grandchildren - Matthew Armstrong and Maggie Armstrong of Lexington, NC, and Amanda Armstrong Vaughan and husband Kenneth Vaughan of Raleigh, NC, and Ashley Armstrong Schaffner and husband Chris Schaffner of Concord.

Jim Armstrong had a passion for missions locally and around the word, so in lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial gifts be sent to Project AGAPE (Armenia) Advance #1800-206-00-908, PO Box 18005, Charlotte NC 28218, and to long range recovery and development in Haiti via UMCOR Haiti Response, Advance #418325, PO Box 18005, Charlotte, NC 28218.

Bass-Smith Funeral Home in Hickory is serving the Armstrong family and on-line condolences may be sent to www.bass-smithfuneralhome.com.
