Son of Margaret Allen and her first husband, Charles Young Webb. Joseph was the last child of six born to this couple.

Family records indicate that Margaret was living with her mother in Kaysville, Davis County, when Joseph was born; a separation from Charles evidently became permanent.

About a year and a half passed, wherein she met and married John Glover Smith in November of 1856, so Joseph was often known as a Smith child, being raised by Smith since that young age. His stepfather was the first LDS Bishop of Smithville, many claim the community was named in his honor.

They lived at Millcreek, in Salt Lake County, prior to moving to Smithfield in 1859. It is not known if young Joseph was buried with his birth name, or as Joseph Allen Smith.

Shortly after Joseph's death, the family moved south to the St. George, Utah region. He may have never had a grave marker.
