Dan was born in Joplin, to Fred and Ada Kirk, now both deceased.
He graduated in 1953 from Cradock High School Portsmouth, VA, and also attended Joplin Junior College.
He began serving in the U.S. Army in December 1958, and was honorably discharged in November 1964.
He worked for EaglePicher Technologies from 1955 to 2000; retiring after 45 years.
Dan married his sweetheart, Shirley Clark, in 1961. They had 52 years together until her death.
He participated in local bowling leagues for a number of years, and took up a golf club occasionally. He was an avid newspaper reader and word puzzle worker. He had a methodical mind for detail, mechanical objects, and numbers. He enjoyed being a husband, father, owner of several pet cats, and maintaining the family home. Known for being a kind gentleman, he always loved a good hamburger and chocolate malt. He loved toe-tapping-whistling-humming classic band era music, and was always game for quirky humor shared with family.
Also preceding him in death are his siblings, Holly Kirk, Fairy McBride, Daisy Dodson, and Bonnie Fritz.
Surviving are his daughter, Melissa Gilbert and her husband Arik, and a number of nieces and nephews and their families, including Virginia Dugan, of Madill, OK, and Carolyn Fehrenbach, of Pittsburg, KS.
Arrangements are under the care of Midland Cremation Society in Joplin, with final resting place to be at Ozark Memorial Park Cemetery, 415 N. St. Louis, Joplin, in the spot shared with his beloved wife.
The family hopes to arrange a future memorial gathering once the national pandemic is more under control.
