Hettie lived in Wauwatosa until at least at time of her mother's death in 1906. Apparently, she married a man by the last name of Smith. No marriage record has been found so the man's first name and marriage date are unknown. Little is known about Hettie until she shows up as a widow in the 1930 census. At this time, she was living with a maternal uncle and aunt, Ferro Kirby and Josephine Gerl Kirby, in National City, San Diego County, California.
On 1 November 1969, Hettie (age 86) died in Los Angeles County. Her obituary reads: 'Smith - Hettie M., Aunt of Mrs. Helen Joyner. Services Tues. 2 p.m. North Chapel, Cypress View Mausoleum. Entombment. Benbough Mortuary directing." (San Diego Union, Tuesday, 4 November 1969)
