Graveside services were held Tuesday, January 9, 2001 at Hillcrest Memorial Park, 9101 Kern Canyon Road.

Lester was born in Lookout, Oklahoma on January 1, 1919. He grew up on a farm with his parents and four brothers. A one-room schoolhouse was his educational home through eighth grade. Les also attended high school where he was a key member of the basketball team. He graduated in 1938 and later joined the Civilian Conversation Corps (CCC), where he rose to the rank of Senior Leader ("First Sergeant"). Les met and romanced Dorothy M Bodford during those years and they were married in 1940.

After the birth of his daughter Aloha in 1941, Lester and his family left Oklahoma and moved to Bakersfield, CA. where he lived until his death. Lester's other two children, a son Vernon and a daughter, Bonnie, were born in Bakersfield.

Les worked as a grocer and taxicab driver in Bakersfield prior to entering the Navy in 1944. Throughout his military service, he was able to send his entire pay home to his family and to subsist on his winnings from poker and dice. Throughout his live he enjoyed a good game of cards or dice, but he always knew when to quit.

After being discharged in 1946, Lester purchased a grocery store on Weedpatch Highway where he was a successful grocer for fifteen years. He was a generous man and sold groceries on credit, even to poor people whom he knew would never be able to repay him.

After selling his grocery store, Lester developed a fishing bait business that he ran until semi-retirement at the age of 80. He was an acknowledged expert in the bait business, and he took great pride in helping district attorneys prosecute crooks involved in fraudulent, get-rich schemes.

Les also was a partner in Chet's Club and Edison Antiques for many years. Until his later years, he fixed and served free holiday dinner to anyone who came into Chet's Club on Thanksgiving or Christmas. He was, on any day of the year, a soft touch for people who where down and out.

In earlier years Les was an avid fisherman and could ofter be spotted on the Kern River or at the Lake. The demands of his work, however, brought his fishing days ot a close in the sixties.

Even after Lester sold the antique shop, antiques remained his passions. He had broad and detailed knowledge of antiques and an expert's eye for their value. During his later years he really enjoyed hunting for antiques and other bargains at auctions and yard sales.

Lester was preceded in death by his wife Dorothy in 1996. He was a generous, kind, and loving father, grandfather, great grandfather and friend. Les made a real, positive difference in the lives of many people. He will be especially missed by his daughters, Aloha and Bonnie; his son, Vernon; his sister-in-law, Auggie South, and his long-time associate, Jim Spaulding. He is also survived by two brothers, Jesse Bliss and wife, Helen of Bakersfield and Vernon Bliss and wife, Denzel of Freedom, Oklahoma. He will also be missed by his other relatives and by his many friends.
