Jane McHugh Bonner, 87, died on July 23, 2020 at Fellowship Home under the care of Hospice of South Georgia.

Jane was born April 16, 1933 in Richland, Ga to the late William Elmer McHugh and Mary Ella Malcom McHugh. She has one beloved sister, Sibyl McGlaun who still lives in Richland.

Jane enjoyed an almost 50-year career as a teacher. She majored in elementary education, earning a degree from VSC in 1953. Later, she received her master’s degree from George Peabody College in Nashville, TN. Jane retired from the public school system after a 30 year career. She then taught for 18 more years at Valwood and St. John Catholic School. Jane was the Valdosta City Schools Teacher of the Year in 1981 and won the Georgia Association of Educator’s Teacher Hall of Fame in 1984. She was extremely involved in committee work for the Valdosta Association of Educators.

Jane was married to Donald Bonner for over 50 years. They always had a house full of people. The entire family gathered at their home to celebrate every holiday and they found any opportunity they could think of to be together. The family spent every Fourth of July together at St. Augustine Beach. Jane enjoyed playing bridge for over 50 years. She loved to cook and entertain. She was also a fine seamstress and loved quilting. She made quilts for each of her grandchildren. Jane had more energy than anyone we knew and would always be busy trying new things.

Her beautiful life will forever be cherished in the lives of her children, Kay Retterbush, Beth Lockhart and husband Karl, and Don Bonner and wife Teresa.

She is also survived by six grandchildren, Chris and Johnny Retterbush, Thomas and Andrew Lockhart, Sarah Grace and Hannah Bonner; her sister, Sybil McGlaun of Richland, and nieces Judith Joseph of Valdosta, Jan McGowan of Americus and a nephew, Mike McGlaun of Richland.

She is preceded in death by her husband Donald Fuller Bonner, a grandson, Kyle Lockhart and her son in law, Scott Retterbush.

A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, July 28, 2020 at Sunset Hill Cemetery. Memorial gifts may be made to Hospice of South Georgia or St. John Catholic School.
