Roman Catholic Pope. Venerated as a saint by the Catholic and Orthodox churches, he was the twentieth occupant of the Holy See (236 January-250 January). His election as pontiff is part of a legend. According to historians of the time, a dove flew over the head of the pilgrim Fabian and induced the cardinals to elect him by popular acclamation. During his pontificate, persecutions against Christians experienced a period of tranquility. However, some fourteen years later, with the advent of Emperor Decius, the decrees against Christianity will once again become restrictive. Pope Fabian opposed this imperial policy and for his rebellion he was imprisoned dying of starvation and torture.
