According to historians of the time, a dove flew over the head of the pilgrim Fabian and induced the cardinals to elect him by popular acclamation. During his pontificate, persecutions against Christians experienced a period of tranquility. However, some fourteen years later, with the advent of Emperor Decius, the decrees against Christianity will once again become restrictive. Pope Fabian opposed this imperial policy and for his rebellion he was imprisoned dying of starvation and torture.
