Charles Edward Hutt was born on April 28, 1922, in Jeffersonville, Indiana, to May Magdalene (Haller) and Lawrence William Hutt, Sr. Charles was the seventh of ten children. Charles attended St. Anthony School, Jeffersonville, Indiana. He attended Mt. St. Francis Seminary in1936. Charles was invested as a novice at St. Anthony Novitiate, Angola, Indiana, August 9, 1942, taking the religious name of David. He professed Simple Vows on August 9, 1943, and professed Solemn Vows on August 10, 1946, Carey, Ohio. Friar David was ordained to the priesthood on May 26, 1949, Holy Rosary Cathedral, Toledo, Ohio. Father David spent most of his priesthood in pastoral ministry. His first assignment as a priest was Assistant Pastor, St. Ann, Chicago Heights, Illinois, in 1949. He was Assistant Pastor (1958-60) St. Joseph, Waupun, Wisconsin: (1960-66) Holy Cross, Lansing, Michigan; (1973-74) St. Ann, Chicago Heights, Illinois; (1975-76) St. Anthony, Clarksville, Indiana; (1988-89) Holy Cross, Lansing, Michigan. He was Chaplain, Fox Lake Correctional Institute, Fox Lake, Wisconsin in 1974. David was Pastor (1957-58) St. Ann, Chicago Heights, Illinois; (1966-73) St. Paul, Pleasure Ridge park, Kentucky; (1976-77) St. Anthony, Angola, Indiana; (1977-85) St. Anthony Clarksville, Indiana; (1985-88) St. Ann, Chicago Heights, Illinois; (1989-91) St. Paul, Pleasure Ridge Park, Kentucky. David was administrator of St. Joseph Hill, Sellersburg, Indiana from 1991-94. The two words that best describe David are love and service. He was very proud to be a Franciscan Friar and honored to be a priest. David loved to give the children special attention. When ever his schedule permitted he would be in the play ground during recess or as school was letting out. He had a great love for the Friars and was always thinking of an excuse to get the local Friars together for a party. David always thought of others. He was noted for visiting relatives, friends, parishioners and Friars when in the area. David lived an open life. You always knew where you stood with him. He was willing to take on extra duties. He wanted to be of service.
During the last five years of his life, David had serious respiratory problems. Because of his emphysema, he was in and out of the hospital with the flu, a very bad cold or pneumonia. David had made a trip to Lansing, Michigan, and it was there that he died on September 13, 1997. David had the early mass and went to his room afterwards. While resting after the Mass, David died peacefully in his sleep.

May he and all of our departed brothers, through the mercy of God, rest in peace.
