Arthur Ervin was the son of William Martin Ervin and Mary Angeline Brewer. In a second marriage for both, his parents wed July 8, 1888. William owned a farm of 380 acres near the community of Lavaca, the majority of which was cultivated. Mary kept the home.

By the 1900 census, Arthur's father moved from his home in Arkansas. He was enumerated with his son James M. Ervin in Township 2, Choctaw Nation, Indian Territory, living between what is now Oklahoma, and his home in Arkansas.
