Earl Haden Ervin was the son of William Martin Ervin and Mary Angeline Brewer. In a second marriage for both, his parents wed July 8, 1888. William Ervin owned a farm of 380 acres near the community of Lavaca. His mother Mary kept the home. Earl and two brothers were born from their union.

By the 1900 census, Earl's father moved from his home in Arkansas. He was enumerated with his son James M. Ervin in Township 2, Choctaw Nation, Indian Territory, living between what is now Oklahoma, and his home in Arkansas.
