This pet canary survived the sinking of the SS Central America which sank on Sept 12, 1857. The canary's owner was Margaret Virginia (Huffington) Birch, wife of fellow passenger, and husband, William Birch. Moments before Virginia was to board a lifeboat, she went to her state-room and saw her pet canary singing in its cage. She took the canary out of his cage and safely secured it in her clothing. The SS Central America is now know as the "Ship of Gold."
