Obituary of Helen C. Patrick
Helen C. Patrick, 92 years old, passed away on Wednesday, August 12, 2020. Helen was born in Birmingham, AL. She was preceded in death by her parents, Carl Thomas Cotman and Nora Mitchell Cotman; brother, Melvin Eugen Cotman; sister, Shirley Cotman and both of her husbands, Robert Newton Womble and Andrew Joseph Patrick. She is survived by her daughters Cynthia Ostrowski and Sherry Womble of Birmingham AL and a step-grandson, Andrew Patrick (Jackie) of Fairhope, AL. Helen graduated from the University of Alabama with a degree in Home Economics, and had a Teaching Certificate from Birmingham Southern College. She taught school for 30 years in the Birmingham Public School System and was a member of Delta Kappa Gamma teachers’ professional organization and was the treasurer for them for a number of years. Before beginning her teaching career, Helen was an assistant buyer for Parisians department store. She attended Community Crossroad Church in Vestavia Hills, AL. Helen was a gentle, caring soul, loved by all who knew her. She had many talents, including her ability to effectively communicate with her students, sewing exquisite garments for her daughters and their dolls. She loved to decorate and spent hours shopping for fabric to re-upholster beloved family furniture, fashioning custom draperies and painting and hanging wallpaper. She re-decorated her own home and the home of family and friends. She loved to play rummy with her family, loved family reunions at the beach and enjoyed spending time with her daughters. She will surely be missed. The family requests, in lieu of flowers that donations be made to St. Francis Xavier School, 2 St. Francis Circle, Birmingham, AL 35213.
