Fr. Eustace Bartoszewicz, OFM Conv., son of Constance and Antonia (Radlowski) Bartoszewicz, was born on April 1, 1885, in Poland. The parents of Fr. Eustace migrated with him to the United States. He was educated at the Parish School of the Transfiguration, Buffalo, NY and St. Francis College, Trenton, NJ. He joined the Conventual Franciscans at Syracuse, NY, and in the Novitiate of the Immaculate Conception Province, he professed his simple vows on October 6, 1902. His philosophical and theological studies were at the Seraphic College, Rome, Italy. Fr. Eustace was ordained to the Holy Priesthood on August 4, 1907 and in the same year he received his doctorate in sacred Theology.
Fr. Eustace's first assignment took him to Corpus Christi Church, Buffalo, NY, as an assistant pastor to Fr. Hyacinth Fudzinski. The Provincial Chapter of 1912 appointed him the Guardian and Pastor of St. Hedwig Church, Detroit, MI. There he built several parish buildings and fostered numerous vocations to the priesthood and religious life.
In 1920, Fr. Eustace was elected Minister Provincial of St. Anthony Province. As Minister Provincial, he continued to serve as pastor in Detroit, while the Province headquarters remained in Buffalo. Fr. Eustace organized the Province formation program. With the permission of the Holy See and the General Definitory a House of Studies for the philosophers and theologians was established at St. Francis, Athol Springs, NY; a separate Novitiate for the Brothers was established at St. Hedwig's, Detroit. In 1923 Fr. Eustace was elected to a second term, but the Minister General, Fr. Dominic Tavani, insisted that he choose between being Pastor and being Minister Provincial. Fr. Eustace decided to remain as pastor. In later year, Fr. Eustace served as Treasurer of the Province. With the division of St. Anthony Province in 1939, he made his affiliation with the new St. Bonaventure Province. In 1942 he was appointed Guardian and Pastor of Our Lady Queen of Angels Parish, Detroit, MI and remained in office until 1960. Rejoining the Province of St. Anthony, he was assigned as Pastor of Corpus Christ Church, Buffalo, NY. In preparation for the celebration of the golden jubilee of the Parish Fr. Eustace organized an improvement plan that was completed just a few days before the festivities. It included the artistic decoration of the interior of the upper church, and the remodeling of the lower church into a 300-seat chapel and several useful rooms. The friary and school also received attention: the fourth floor in the friary was remodeled into ten additional rooms, the floors in the classrooms of the school were covered with tile, and the parish auditorium was renovated. Two weeks prior to the Jubilee, two new bells and six luminous electric clocks were installed in the twin towers of the church. The cost of the improvements totaled $125,000.00, generously donated by the parishioners. After 1963, Fr. Eustace's health and sight began to fail, and he was sent to St. Hyacinth Friary, Auburn, NY. It was there that his earthly sojourn came to an end on February 14, 1973, in the 88th year of his life, 71st of his Profession and 66th of his priesthood. A concelebrated Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated in Corpus Christi Church, Buffalo, New York and the mortal remains of Fr. Eustace were laid to rest in St. Stanislaus Cemetery, Buffalo (Cemetery #2, "New Cemetery," Circle 3, Line #1, Grave #4.)
