DUCHESS OF NORTHUMBERLAND

Eleanor was the first born child and eldest daughter of Richard Grosvenor, 2nd Marquess of Westminster and Lady Elizabeth Mary Leveson-Gower. She married Algernon Percy, Lord Prudhoe (later 4th Duke of Northumberland) on 27 August 1842 at St. George's Hanover Square, London. Sadly, their marriage was childless. A few months after Eleanor was widowed in 1865 she took up residence in Stanwick Hall near Darlington & Stanwick St. John, North Yorkshire and primarily lived there for forty six years.

BIRTH: Morning Post 25 October 1820
On Sunday evening, the 22nd instant, Lady Elizabeth Belgrave, of a daughter, at Lord Belgrave's house in Grosvenor-square.

DEATH OF A DUCHESS: Pall Mall Gazette 04 May 1911
We regret to announce that Eleanor Duchess of Northumberland died at Stanwick Park, Darlington, this morning. She was a daughter of the second Marquis of Westminster, and was married in 1842 to the fourth Duke of Northumberland, who died in 1865. Her Grace, who was ninety-one years of age, had been ill for about a week.

FUNERAL OF ELEANOR, DUCHESS OF NORTHUMBERLAND: The Yorkshire Post 08 May 1911
An impressive scene was witnessed in the village churchyard of Stanwick St. John, about eight miles from Darlington, at the obsequies of Eleanor, Duchess of Northumberland, on Saturday. Stanwick Hall is within the parish, and for upwards of forty years her Grace had resided there, actively engaged as long as her health permitted in taking a lead in the social life of the district, and in furthering schemes of religious and educational work. The church at Aldborough, which is part of the parish of Stanwick, was erected by her munificence, reading rooms and places of recreation in many of the adjoining parishes , as well as her own, have been largely assisted by her, and the poor ever had in her a devoted friend. It was little wonder, therefore, that the villagers turned out in large numbers to pay a last mark of respect.

The remains were borne to their last resting place by men employed on the estate, the mourners, servants, and friends following on foot. At the church gates the cortege was met by the Lord Bishop of Richmond (the Right Rev. Dr. Pulleine), the Rev. E. Spencer Gough, M.A. (rector of Barningham and rural dean), the Rev. H. Pollexfen (vicar of Stanwick St. John), the Rev. R. C. Swayne (curate), the Rev. V. J. Ryan, M.A. (vicar of Manfield and rural dean), the Rev. the Hon. Algernon Lawley, M.A. (a relative of her Grace), and the Rev. J.M. Marshall, M.A. (rector of Croft). The opening sentences were said by the Rev. H. Pollexfen, and when the mourners had taken their places in the church, the crowded congregation, led by the combined choirs of Stanwick and Aldborough, joined in the 90th Psalm. This was followed by the hymn, "For ever with the Lord." The Rev. the Hon. Algernon Lawley read the lesson. The hymn "On the Resurrection Morning," concluded the service in the church. The committal prayers were said by the Bishop of Richmond.
