Jeweler and watchmaker. Son of William and Hannah (McDonald) Jelly, he left his native city to make his fortune in Sacramento where he worked as a silver chaser (embosser) and eventually owned and operated a jewelry shop. He was the husband of Mary Jane Carleton, whom he married in Salem in 1854, and Julia M. Cushing, whom he married in Sacramento in 1865. (American Silversmiths)
