Ralph Ashby, 93 of Litchfield Park passed away September 8. He was born January 3, 1915 in Henderson, Texas. Ralph and his family moved to Tempe when he was nine years old. Ralph met Grace Ruddell at Phoenix Union High School and they married June 6, 1933. Ralph worked for United Producers and Consumers Cooperative for many years. In 1943, Ralph moved his family to Litchfield and became part of the Litchfield Farm Apprentice Program. The Litchfield Farm Apprentice Program was established in 1937, to establish a mechanized farming operation and the Southwest Cotton Company, in cooperation with the University of Arizona School of Agriculture, who helped train young men who were ambitious and had farm experience. Upon completion of the apprentice program Ralph earned the right to purchase 80 acres of land at Sarival Avenue and Bethany Home Road which is still part of the family farm. Ralph established a 500 cow dairy and he and son Stanley farmed cotton, wheat, vegetables and feed crops on their 260 acres. Ralph was a member of the Board of directors of the United Producers and Consumers Cooperative for many years. He was also a member of the Litchfield Kiwanis Club. Ralph and Grace retired to Payson in 1980, where Grace passed away in 1995. Ralph and Grace, were married for 63 years. Ralph is survived by his sister Hazel Chlarson, daughter Janice Rex (John), sons Dennis (Sharon), Stanley (Judy), Rob, and Ronald (Tacy), plus ten grandchildren, Shaun and Shane Rex, Rosemarie Barbee, Lori White, Denise Metzentine, Molly Kinder, Chuck Ashby, Brandon Ashby, Elizabeth Schrey, and Veronica Frost, seven great-grandchildren, Jason, Kyle, Emily, Mackenzie, Isabella, Chelsea, and Casandra. Visitation will be Saturday, September 15, at Greenwood Memory Lawn Serenity Chapel at 9 a.m. A memorial service will take place after visitation at 10 a.m. Burial will be immediatly following in the Rose Garden at Greenwood. In lieu of flowers the family requests contributions be made to Hospice of the Valley.
