Karen Riley Alvis

August 28, 1968 - August 30, 2020

Karen Riley Alvis, loving mother, wife, sister, and friend passed from the loving embrace of her husband David into the arms of our Savior on August 30, 2020. A graduate of Graham High School and resident of Bluefield, VA she made the world around her a better place to be and a better place to live. Karen was employed by Mercer County Schools as secretary at Montcalm High School, where she was a mentor and friend to her "kids" for the past ten years. She was a member of the Highlands Fellowship Church in Bluefield, VA. She was active in her community and was an avid supporter of Graham High School sports. Karen was creative and enjoyed crafting and decorating; she loved gardening and growing flowers; she had a knack for making all things beautiful. Karen was preceded in death by her parents, John Riley, Jr. and Mickey Riley. Left to cherish her memory, love and smile is her husband and the true love of her life, David Alvis. Karen loved her babies fiercely: Michael Alvis (Stefanie) of Clemmons, NC; John Brewster (Melissa) of Baltimore, Maryland; Hannah Brewster and Ethan Alvis (her miracle baby) of the home. Karen was so happy to be Nana to Alana Beth and Elliott Kai and was blessed to spend her last weekend before becoming ill loving on them. She had one brother, Kevin Riley and nephew, Nolan Riley of Salem, VA: Uncles, Mark Riley (Kathy) of Bluefield, VA and Bill Jessee of Minnesota. Karen is also survived by her in-laws, Jerry and Martha Alvis of Princeton, WV; sister-in-law Becky Lilly (Tim) also of Princeton and brother-in-law Mark Alvis of Lexington, KY. Karen was aunt to Scott Lilly of Kailua, HI, Matthew Lilly of Virginia Beach, VA and Luke Lilly (Emily) of Athens, WV. Karen became great-aunt to Reagan Lilly in April. Karen was so many things to so many people and she will be greatly missed by her family, her communities, her friends, and everyone whose lives she touched. Rev. Robbie Gaines will be officiating a private funeral and interment in Athens Cemetery.
