Writer. Born Anna Maria Geertruida Schmidt in Kapelle, Netherlands, she was a creative writer known as the mother of the Dutch theatrical song and the queen of Dutch children's literature. Many of her books have been made into films and her children's books have become a national institution. Her many works included "Minoes" (1970), "Bob and Jilly" (1976), "Dusty and Smudge and the Bride" (1977), "Otje" (1981) and "Minnie" (1994). In 1988, the Swedish author Astrid Lindgren presented her with the Hans Christian Andersen Award, the Nobel Prize of children's literature. She died at age 84 in Amsterdam, Netherlands.
