Sarah Deakin nee Bill was born on a farm in the Parish of Llanarth, Monmouthshire....at a time when there was doubt about whether Monmouthshire was in England or Wales. As a result of the Local Government Act 1972, it is now in Wales.
She married William Deakin at Grosmount, County Monmouth on 18 October 1849. She was the daughter of William Augustus Bill, a farmer, and Sarah Jones, his wife, the daughter of a farmer.
Sarah and William migrated to Australia on the Samuel Boddington, disembarking at Adelaide, South Australia in March 1850. Their daughter Catherine Sarah "Kate" Deakin was born in Adelaide on 21 July 1850.
The family joined the gold rush. In Adelaide, William had described himself as a "storekeeper and clerk." By 1853, the family had left the goldfields and settled in a part of Collingwood, later to become Fitzroy. Their second of two children, Alfred Deakin, was born at his parents' cottage at 90 George Street, Fitzroy on 3 August 1856.
William, in partnership with Sarah's brother Richard Bill, ran a coach business in Gore Street, Fitzroy, which became a branch of Cobb & Co, after which William worked as manager and accountant of the Cobb & Co branch.
Alfred Deakin became 2nd Prime Minister of Australia and was Prime Minister for three terms [24 September 1903 - 27 April 1904, 5 July 1905 - 13 November 1908, and 2 June 1909 - 29 April 1910. Sarah died during Alfred's second term as Prime Minister.
