"THOS. CHIVINGTON, a son of Colonel Chivington, of Kansas, was drowued at North Platte crossing, on the 24th. He was swimming out to attach a rope to a boat, lying on an island in the middle of the stream, when he was taken with the cramp. and the current swept him down stream."

From The Atchison Daily Free Press (Atchison, Kansas, July 7, 1866:
There is a long article regarding the drowning of Thomas. The final part reads:
"We have not yet found his body. The boys are searching this morning."

Other articles say the drowning took place in the North Platte River, forty miles west of Fort Hallack. From The Atchison Daily Free Press (Atchison, Kansas), June 30, 1866.

Another reads that the body was not recovered at the time, because services were not held until March of 1867. This is from the book, "My Mother's People To Colorado They Came" by Patricia Kinney Kaufman.

Fort Halleck (1862-1866) was a military outpost that existed along the Overland Trail and stage route in what was then the Territory of Idaho, now in the state of Wyoming.
