Mary Jane Smith was the daughter of George L. Smith and his wife, Ellenora Chappell.
Mary Jane was married first to Joshua W. Murphy on January 27, 1889. Joshua was born on October 1, 1870 in Princess Anne County, Virginia, the son of William Edward Murphy, Sr. and his wife, Cynthia F. Whitehurst. Joshua and Mary Jane had three children; Walter Winford Murphy, Wilbur Lee Murphy, and Mattie L. Murphy.
Mary Jane was married second to Steven W. Dudley on May 4, 1900 in what was then Princess Anne County, Virginia (now city of Virginia Beach). Steven was born about 1878 in Virginia and died August 2, 1920 in Princess Anne County, Virginia.

Princess Anne County, Virginia marriage records show the following -
"May 4, 1900 - Stephen Dudley, single, and Mary Murphy, widowed - Stephen Dudley, age 23, born in and residing in Princess Anne County, Virginia, occupation Farmer, son of Stephen Dudley and his wife, Elizabeth - Mary Murphy, age 27, born in and residing in Princess Anne County, Virginia, daughter of George R. Smith and his wife, Elenora"

"Mrs. Dudley, 80, Dies; Leaves 81 Descendants
Mrs. Mary Jane Dudley, 80, widow of Stephen Dudley and a lifelong resident of Princess Anne County, died yesterday at 7 a.m. at her residence at Back Bay. She leaves 81 descendants.
Mrs. Dudley was a daughter of George L. and Mrs. Eleanor Chappel Smith.
Surviving are two daughters, Mrs. W.H. Mosley, of Princess Anne County, and Mrs. Russell D. Ackiss, of Broad Creek Village; two sons, Wilbur L., Murphy and Jesse L. Dudley; one sister, Mrs. Lena V. Pallett, and one brother, William H. Smith, all of Princess Anne County; 19 grandchildren, 58 great-grandchildren and four great-great-granchildren.
The body will be taken from The Hollomon-Brown Funeral Home to Charity Methodist Church, of which she was a member, for funeral services tomorrow at 2 p.m. The body will lie in state one hour prior to services. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
