Little Joyce drowned at age 19 months in a tragic farmyard accident at home when she fell into a round wood watering tank for horses and cows while she was playing outside. She had been dropping pebbles in the tank to watch the resulting ripples in the water. It's believed she leaned over too far and tumbled head-first into the tank, where she was found later by her brother who was playing elsewhere in the yard with the hired man's children. Junior ran inside and summoned his mother. Little Joyce was floating face-down, and had swallowed too much water to be revived by her mother, who jumped into the tank and pulled her daughter out. Father was away working with his threshing rig and its crew. He was summoned also, but to no avail. At the funeral, Joyce's young cousins, Wilma and Carol Diller, served as pallbearers for the small coffin.

One of the few pictures of Joyce Coulter, shown here with her parents Fred & Verna and her big brother Fred Jr. My father (Fred Sr.) told me nearly half a century later that Joyce was a sunny, happy baby who seldom cried.
