The "Minister of ye Gospel at Stratfield, Age 48 yrs", Rev. Chauncey was born to Israel and Mary (nee Nichols) Chauncey in 1668. He graduated from Harvard in 1686 and had served as Pastor of the Stratfield congregation for 19 years, from 1695 until his death in 1714. In March 1698, during the third year of his ministry to the Stratfield congregation, he married the former Sarah Wolcott (1676-1704), who predeceased him at age 28 a decade before his death. Originally interred in old Stratfield Cemetery, his remains were transferred here in 1926 along with those of four other religious leaders of the early American era.
