Monika Krahl Abrams was born in 1949 in Mülheim, Germany. Several years after her birth, she and her parents, Bruno and Henriette Krahl, moved to the United States, settling in Glen Cove. Later, her sister and life-long best friend Linda was born. As a young adult, Monika was accepted to Mount St. Mary’s nursing program and found her life’s calling. Over the years, she excelled as a nurse for a hemodialysis unit as well as United Cerebral Palsy, though she eventually settled upon being a hospice nurse. In this capacity, Monika was especially gifted, providing exceptional comfort and care to those in their last stages of life. In 1977, she married the love of her life, Mark Abrams, a fellow North Shore Hospital employee. They had two children, Ingrid Henny and Judd Charles, whom they supported with countless soccer games, music lessons, and plenty of love. Over the years, Monika, a great lover of animals, adopted several dogs and cats, providing a loving home to shelter animals and even cats who wandered into the back yard. Monika was a skilled quilter and baker, delighting anyone lucky enough to receive one of her quilts, canned jams, or cakes.
On Nov. 20, Monika passed away, surrounded by her husband and children, who held her hands and played her Eric Clapton songs. She will be dearly missed by her family, as well as those who knew her as a nurse and friend. Services will be private.
