By the time that John was born in 1868 his uncle, John M. Ferree, had been killed in the Civil War. It is probable that his parents named him after this uncle.

John M Ferree uncle, fought with the 59th Ohio & died in battle of Chicamauga, GA

John's father, William G Ferree, did not fight in the Civil War. He stayed at home and took care of his family and his brother Richard's family. Richard went to war, left 4 children behind to be cared for, and died in a Southern prison.

John married Clara Zinsmeister on November 10, 1897 in Butler County, Ohio. They had at least 3 children: Manilla P. b in 1898; Marie C b in 1899 & Vida S born in 1905.
