Sculptor. Jean Verschneider received fame as a French sculptor, who participated in the sculpture event in the art competition at the 1924 Summer Olympics. He started to exhibit at the Paris Salon in 1905, showing subjects obviously inspired by Roman antiquity, and others with symbolism. He had repeat showings through the 1920s. Some of his most-recognized pieces are the 1930 "Forbidden fruits," a large art deco silver plated bronze group of a young boy and a monkey; unnamed and undated, a patinated bronze figural group of a lion tamer with lion; undated, "Young Man Fighting the Eagle," which recently sold for $1,840; undated "Mercury;" "Golden Apples and the Nude;" and the 1920 "Young Motorist." At Sotheby's Arcade Auctions, his 1925 lamp described as a tapering cylindrical raised on a base decorated in geometric designs in silver metal and various patina selling between $1,000 and $1,500. His "Maiden with a Kissing Fawn" sold at $1,450. Another lamp, which is dated 1900, has a bronze maiden dressed in draping sheers with her arms over her head holding an alabaster disc. All of his pieces are well-marked with his full signature. He also did oil on canvas landscapes.
