Military Officer, Nicaraguan Head of State. A long-time close friend of the Somoza family of Nicaragua, Martínez Lacayo was a career military officer and rose to the rank of Major General in Nicaragua’s National Guard. In 1972, President Anastasio Somoza Debayle was forced to step down from power in an agreement that stated that he would leave office for two years before being eligible for reelection. In his place, Martínez Lacayo was appointed to the Junta Nacional de Gobierno (JNG) with Dr. Alfonso Lovo Cordero and Dr. Fernando Agüero Rocha to serve collectively as the co-heads of state of the government of Nicaragua. Following the reelection of Somoza Debayle as President in 1974, he was appointed to the Nicaraguan Senate.
