Roman Catholic Saint. Hailing from a rich family which moved to Naples shortly after his birth, where he was to remain for the rest of his life, Giuseppe Moscati gained his first interest in medicine following an accident suffered by one of his brothers. Graduating in 1903, he soon became known for his deep humanitarian services across the city, especially during a cholera outbreak and the Great War. He not only did not charge most of his patients, but moreover would give them financial assistance in order to procure the required medications. Passing suddenly away at the early age of 46, he was buried in the cemetery of Poggio Reale before being moved to the church of Gesù Nuovo three years later. Declared blessed by Pope Paul VI on November 16, 1975, he was canonized by Pope John Paul II on October 25, 1987, becoming thus, the first modern doctor to be declared saint. His liturgical memory is celebrated on November 16.
