Russ was born April 27, 1913 in Clinton, IA to Hjelmer and Katherine (Christiansen) Nelson. He was educated in the Clinton Grade Schools and was a graduate of Clinton High School. Russ married Ardelle Juhl on June 27, 1937 in Clinton, IA. She died July 14, 2007. He was employed as the Clinton, IA and Illinois Sales Representative for the former Curtis Company in Clinton, IA. He then worked as the Illinois Sales Representative for the former Bennett Box Company in Clinton. Later, he started Builders Supply Company in Clinton and the former Nelson Lumber Company in Fulton, IL. Russ was a member of the former St. Steven's Lutheran Church in Clinton, the Fulton Lions Club, a 50 year member of Fulton City Lodge #189, and the Scottish Rite-Valley of Clinton, Orient of Iowa. He was an avid hunter and fisherman. He was known for his generous donation of refurbished fishing poles to the Whiteside County Sheriff's Department Youth Fishing Derby.
Survivors include one son, Roy (Mary Jo) Nelson of Fulton, IL; one granddaughter, Christine (Mrs. Eric) Gerdes of Brighton, MI; and one great granddaughter, Allison Katherine Gerdes.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Ardelle; one sister, Jeanette Hoffman, two brothers, Marvin and LeRoy Nelson.
