John Engler was born in Baden Germany on March 3, 1834 he came to America at the age of 20 in 1854 with his family. He resided in Rochester New York for a few years. In or around 1858 he made his way to Baltimore MD. Where he met and married Anna Mary Heisler (Hausler} in December.

Their first child was born in 1860. In August of 1862 he joined Co.C 107 Reg't Ohio Inf. of the Union Army and fought in the Civil War. He developed Typhoid Fever later that year and was honorably discharged from service.

He was a boot maker and the son of a boot maker. John and Anna Mary lived in Richland, Ohio for about 5 years and had 3 girls Maggie, May and Kate. They made their way west in about 1865 with their 3 little girls. They lived in Springfield Mo. for about 3 years where John W. Engler and his older brother George were born. In 1872 the family moved to Nortonville California, with the hope of making a good living wage for his growing family, selling boots to the miners of Nortonville Ca.

Another daughter was born in 1872. Their son Charles was born in May of 1873 and died in October of 1874.
