Theodore “Ted” Benko, departed this life on April 25, 2016.
Born in Pueblo, Colo., on June 10, 1925, to Nicholas and Anne (Casack) Benko. He graduated from Centennial High School in 1942. After working as a crew caller for the Denver & Rio Grande Railroad, he joined the U.S. Navy in August of 1943. Ted proudly served as a radioman, First Class, during World War II. After discharge in April of 1946, he was employed by CF&I Steel Corp., where he worked for 36 years. There, he met the love of his life, Sara Joann Moore, whom he married on Dec. 15, 1963. They lived in Pueblo until 1985, when Sara was hired by the Department of Defense Dependent Schools (DODDS) to teach the children of U.S. service personnel stationed overseas. The couple lived in the German state of Bavaria, where Sara taught music and Ted worked for the housing office and post office within the Grafenwohr military community. They also lived on the island of Bermuda and in Okinawa Prefecture, Japan. They traveled to over 22 countries, before settling in the mountains of Bailey, Colo., where they lived until 2013.
Predeceased by his wife, Sara; brothers, Michael Benko, Andrew Benko, Nicholas Benko Jr., George Benko; sisters, Christine Povlock, Margarit Ben-ko and Theresa Benko.
