Born in Kirksville, IN (now Wheeling) to William Abraham and Florence (Thompson) Kirk, his grandfather Lindsay Kirk helped to raise him, as evident by the 1900 U.S. Census. Edgar joined the military in 1916 and served for many years. He died at the VA Hospital in Louisville, but he and Jeannette lived on Orleans, IN. They had at least one daughter, who was born in the Panama Canal Zone. His KY Death Certificate shows he was buried here 16 May 1962. Ochs Funeral Home handled the arrangements.

From Contributor Barry C (47806468):
The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Second Lieutenant (Infantry) Edgar Kirk, United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with 2d Machine-Gun Battalion, 1st Division, A.E.F., near Soissons, France, 19 July 1918. At a critical period in the attack south of Soissons when the infantry was held up by a German battery, Second Lieutenant Kirk pushed forward with one of his machine guns in the face of direct machine-gun and artillery fire and by cool and courageous direction of this gun put the battery out of action, thereby causing its capture and permitting the infantry to advance.
