Harold "Gene" Cornette, age 72, resident of St. Rt. 61 South, Shelby died Saturday, May 3, 2003 in MedCentral/Mansfield following a lengthy illness.

Born July 13, 1930 in Morehead, KY to Robert and Bessie (McKinney) Cornette he had been a Shelby resident the majority of his life. A sergeant in the US Army he served in the Korean conflict where he was the recipient of the Purple Heart. Mr. Cornette had been employed with the former Shelby Cycle Co., AMF, Inc. and retired from Ballenoff Home Products in 1982. A lifetime member of the VFW Post #291, he enjoyed fishing, hunting and being with his family.

Survivors include his wife, Marilyn (Cassity) Cornette, whom he wed June 16, 1952; two daughters, Gloria Ernsberger of Shelby and Connie Pugh of Willard; one son, Wendell Cornette of Tampa, FL; four grandchildren, Danny Ernsberger, Eric Ernsberger, Timmy Pugh, and Cara Consiglio; four great-grandchildren, Derrick and Sidney Ernsberger and Kalie and Timothy Pugh; one step-great-grandchild, Zach; one brother, Gilbert Cornette of Daytona, FL, nieces, nephews and other relatives. In addition to his parents, two brothers, Elwood and Robert Cornette and one sister, Alma Cornette, preceded him in death.

Funeral services will be held 11:00 AM Tuesday from the Barkdull Funeral Home. Rev. Ronald Carey will officiate with interment in Oakland Cemetery with full military honors conducted by the Richland County Joint Veterans Council. Friends may call at the funeral home Monday from 2:00 - 4:00 and 6:00 - 8:00 PM.
