JAMES S. BANISTER, Jackson Township.
J. S. BANISTER, the eleventh child of Burrel Banister, was born March 18, 1823, in Sand Creek Township, Bartholomew Co., Ind. His father died when he was but twelve years of age, and he, with the other children, were thrown upon their own resources to a great extent. He remained at home until all the brothers and sisters were married and off for themselves; on the 7th day of May, 1847, he was married to Miss Margaret TALKINGTON, of Decatur County, Ind.; she was a daughter of Stephen and Mary Talkington. This couple have been blessed with children as follows: Mary Ann, William, Catherine M. (deceased), Matilda (deceased), Nancy J., George W. (deceased), Martha E. and James Evert.
Mr. Banister settled in Jackson Township soon after his marriage, where he has resided since; he bought eighty acres of land in 1849; since which time he has purchased forty more; a part of this farm was converted into village lots, which are included as a portion of the plat of the town of Alert. He is a farmer, and conducts his work by personal attention in the field; he also operates a saw and feed mill at Alert, which has been a great convenience to the surrounding country and a source of profit to the owner. His farm residence, one-half mile from Alert, is a pleasant, home-like place, which offers comfort to the family and friends of its proprietor, who is every ready, with a genial welcome, to meet those who would be his honorable guests
Mr. Banister and wife are members of the Christian Union Church of Alert, though they were formerly connected with the Methodist Episcopal denomination. They have borne an active part in the establishment of the church which now includes them, one feature of this body being its simple faith and unostentatious mode of worship. Their son, William Banister, is Postmaster at Alert and is one of the promising men of that locality.
James S. Banister is a Democrat in his political faith, and possesses the entire confidence of the people; he has served as Assessor for Jackson Township for twelve years and upon many local boards of appraisement. He is a time-honored brother of the Masonic fraternity and belongs to the lodge at Alert.
