Opera singer. She was referred to as the Viennese nightingale and praised as a Mozart and Strauss interpreter.
Born at Barnaul, Russia, she moved with her parents as a child to Germany. Her teachers included Willi Dormgraf-Fassbaender, Erna Berger and Maria Ivogün.
It was during WWII that she made her debut at the Stadttheater Ústí nad Labern, Bohemia, in the role of Zerbinetta in Richard Strauss' opera Ariadne Auf Naxos. Three years on came her first engagement at the Staatsoper Unter Den Linden in Berlin and she remained there until 1952. She then moved to Bayreuth the same year, to Vienna in 1953 and to Salzburg in 1954. Following this there were appearances at La Scala in Milan and at Covent Garden, London.
Later, after her wonderful career, from 1974 onwards she taught at the Folkswang Hochschule in Essen and the music academy in Vienna. She also gave fine master classes in her joyful manner during the Salzburg Festival. A very sad and great loss, she died in Vienna aged 66.
