Agnes Currie was born April 10, 1907 in Big Spring to Margaret and T. S. Currie. She passed away on April 19, 2004 at Mountain View Lodge, which was her home for the past ten years.
Her funeral service will be at 11:00 AM, Wednesday, April 21, 2004, at the First Presbyterian Church with the Reverend Matt Miles, officiating. Interment will follow at Mount Olive Memorial Park.
She was a devoted member of First Presbyterian Church since 1919.
She graduated from Big Spring High School in 1925, continuing her education at Lindenwood College in St. Charles, Missouri. She earned a B.A. degree in history and English, graduating in 1929.
She completed 43 years of teaching in the Big Spring School System retiring in May, 1972. Agnes helped many of her scholastic children and grandchildren, always with anonymity, to continue their education.
A charter member of Delta Kappa Gamma Sorority, she achieved life membership with a scholarship given yearly in her name.
She was inducted into the Big Spring High School Hall of Fame in 1978. Her volunteer service included the Big Spring State Hospital, The Heritage Museum, The Howard County Historical Society and Meals on Wheels. Perhaps her most important service was the countless hours she spent visiting and assisting those in nursing homes and hospitals. She could be found paying her respects at most funerals.
She was named "Woman of the Year" by the Big Spring Chamber of Commerce in 1984.
She is survived by one niece, Ann Currie McComb of Austin and one nephew, John Currie and wife, Ruth, of Big Spring. Six great nieces and nephews, Carol Currie Martin, Bob Currie, Henry Currie, Tom Currie, Karen McComb Farabee and Paul McComb and several great, great nieces and nephews.
She was attended by five excellent and loyal caretakers during her time at Mountain View - Joyce Arseneaux, Marie Garrett, Tommy Regalado, Lois Treadway and Patsy Cavazos.
