Obituary
The Monitor in McAllen, Texas
March 5, 2017

Elida Cavazos Alvarado, 83, went home to our Lord on Thursday, March 2, 2017, surrounded by her family.

Mrs. Alvarado was born in Edinburg, where she built a full and joyful life with her husband, Marin L. Alvarado, Sr. and their six children: Jaime (Carla) Alvarado of North Richland Hills, Sonia (James) Finley of McAllen, Marin (Santa) Alvarado, Jr. of Edinburg, Norma (Dr. Lucas) Hinojosa of Edinburg, Gustavo (Trudi) Alvarado of Edinburg, and Sandra (Albert) Rodriguez of Houston. Her heart and home continued to grow with the addition of 16 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren.

Mrs. Alvarado was a life-long educator, starting as a teacher's aide at Stephen F. Austin Elementary School. After earning a Bachelor of Science degree with honors from Pan American University, Mrs. Alvarado continued teaching children across Edinburg until she retired in 2002 after 35 years of service. Mrs. Alvarado was a passionate advocate for every child, working tirelessly to ensure each student met and even exceeded their potential.

This passion for the wellbeing of children extended far beyond the classroom, as Mrs. Alvarado served her community by coaching Little League baseball, volunteering with the Edinburg High School Band Booster Club, and teaching CCD classes at Holy Family Catholic Church. In her spare time, Mrs. Alvarado created one of a kind gowns for her daughters, daughters-in-law, and granddaughters to wear at their weddings, dances, and baptisms.

Mrs. Alvarado was an enthusiastic presence at all of the extracurricular activities of her 16 grandchildren, spending most evenings and weekends shuttling between sporting events, dance recitals, academic competitions, and livestock shows. She proudly displayed a bumper sticker on her van for each grandchild when they enrolled in college.

She is preceded in death by her parents, Manuel and Jesusa Cavazos, and five brothers, Eligio Cavazos, Virgilio "Pilo" Cavazos, Cayetano Cavazos, Manuel Cavazos, and Jose "Joe" Cavazos. She is also survived by her sisters Juanita Garza and Lupita (Alonzo) Vega, both from Edinburg, and her sisters-in-law, Lillie, Sue, Oralia, Lucrecia, Irma, and Linda.

Visitation will be held from 5:00 - 9:00 p.m. with a 7:00 p.m. rosary today, March 5, 2017, at Memorial Funeral Home, 208 E. Canton in Edinburg. Funeral service will take place at 10:00 a.m. on Monday, March 6, 2017, at Holy Family Catholic Church in Edinburg. Interment will follow at Hillcrest Memorial Park in Edinburg. Her grandsons will serve as pallbearers.
