2913 Sapper J Wood, 37th Field Company, Royal Engineers. He fell ill 6 weeks after the relief of Ladysmith and died of enteric fever (typhoid) at No 4 Stationary Hospital, Chieveley, about 6km north of Frere, Natal. He is also commemorated (as Sapper I Wood) on the Royal Engineers South African Memorial Arch in Brompton Barracks, Gillingham, Kent (see: https://www.warmemorialsonline.org.uk/memorial/131150/).
