199 Rifleman A Stannard, 1st Battalion King's Royal Rifle Corps. The Battalion was at Glencoe, Natal when the war broke out, and fought at the battle of Glencoe or Talana Hill on 20 Oct 1899 (18 killed and over 80 wounded) and at Lombard's Kop on 30 Oct 1899. They were in Ladysmith throughout the seige and were holding Waggon Hill during the great attack by the Boers on 6 Jan 1900 (10 killed and 20 wounded). Rifleman Stannard died of enteric fever (typhoid) at No 4 Stationary Hospital, Chieveley, about 6km north of Frere, Natal. He is commemorated on the Boar War memorial in Chieveley War Cemetery, KwaZulu-Natal.
