Melba McLendon was born on January 8, 1907 in Washington, Georgia. Her parents, Joe and Lucy (Butler) Harris, and one brother preceded her in death.

Melba matriculated through Morris Brown High School and Savannah State College where she earned a degree in education. She employed that degree through her 35 year career as an educator in the Wilkes County School District. Melba organized the first chorus at Washington Central High School (now Washington-Wilkes Comprehensive High School) during her tenure as music teacher. It was her love of music that lead her to teach, and the culmination of both passions lead Melba to teach piano to many of the children in Wilkes County.

Melba was a member of Mt. Carmel Baptist Church in Washington and was the pianist there. Concurrently, Melba was the pianist for the Jackson Chapel AME Church in Washington for over 40 years. Melba was the proprietor of a florist shop on Whitehall Street in Washington.

Melba was survived by her husband, T. A. McLendon; brothers, Charles Harris of Atlanta, and Joseph Harris, Jr. of Evanston, Ill.; sisters, Lucyle Dubose of Washington, Ga., and Eleanor Brown of Cleveland, Ohio.
