Inscription

(Major Samuel Shaw), third son of Francis & Sarah, served as an Officer in the Revolutionary War, from its commencement to its close. On the 22d of Feb 1784, he sailed from New York in the Ship Empress of China, for Canton, as Supercargo & part owner; this being the first vessel that sailed from the United States for that place he was appointed by Washington Consul to China, which office he held until his death in 1794.
