Cornelius Bassett was a distinguished person in civil and military affairs, being Colonel of the militia 1757-1762 and deputy sheriff 1768. He was selectman 1767-73 and was licensed as innholder 1762-73. He died on October 1, 1778 and administration of his estate was granted on December 11, 1778 to his sons Ebenezer and John. Inventory of £2228-3-3 indicated his great wealth. The estate was divided 1782.

Cornelius Bassett's gravestone was apparently intact in 1904 as it is recorded in Vital Records of Chilmark, Massachusetts to the Year 1850, published by the New-England Historic Genealogical Society (Boston, Mass. 1904) at p. 85, but no cemetery is mentioned:
