Verna E. Hansen, 102, of Manitowoc, died of natural causes on January 24, 2021 in the home her husband built for them in 1959. Verna was born June 28, 1918, in the Town of Lind in Waupaca County to David Russell and Sarah Orra (Potratz) Davidson.

Verna graduated from Waupaca High School in 1936. She then completed two years of college at Stevens Point State Teachers College, where she received her Teaching Certificate in 1938. She taught in the Waupaca County rural schools from 1938-1945.

On May 1, 1943, she married Claro Leroy Hansen in the city of Waupaca. In 1945 they moved to Manitowoc where together they raised two boys, Mitchell and Marshall. Along with raising her family, Verna went on to receive her degree in Elementary Education at Holy Family College, graduating in 1968. She then completed post-graduate work at the University of Wisconsin - Oshkosh, receiving credentials toward her Lifetime Reading Certification in 1978.

Verna worked as a substitute teacher and summer school teacher in Manitowoc while the boys were young. She taught second grade at Valders Elementary School from 1964-1967, then as a Title 1 Reading Teacher at Madison Elementary School in Manitowoc from 1967-1971. She continued in the Title 1 Reading Program for the Sheboygan Area School District from 1971 until her retirement in 1983.

While pursuing her teaching career, Verna was actively involved with the family business, C.L. Hansen Construction, Inc., and was the bookkeeper for her son's business, Hansen Motorcycles, Inc. She was formerly a volunteer for the Toys for Tots program, a member of the Red Hatters Society, and an avid scrabble player. Verna was a die-hard Brewer, Packer, Badger, and Bucks fan, and she loved to travel domestically and abroad. Most of all, Verna was known for her kind heart and wonderful disposition.

Verna is survived by her sons and daughters-in-law, Mitchell (Sally) Hansen and Marshall (Mia Quistorf) Hansen along with their daughter Brittany Quistorf, all of Manitowoc; sister Iona (Wiley) Parrish, Murphysboro, IL; and sister-in-law Doris Davidson of New Berlin. Many nieces, nephews, and friends also survive.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Claro, brothers and sisters-in-law Justan (Aldine & Eunice) Davidson, Arlen (Carolyn & Yvonne) Davidson, Arden Davidson, Daryl (JoAnne) Davidson, and Sidney Davidson; sister and brother in-law Enid (Edward) Cechvala; and brother-in-law Lloyd Schmidt.

Verna was very fortunate to die at home, thanks to her son Marshall, who became her main caregiver since May 1, 2020, when the pandemic reduced face-to-face visitation at the assisted living facility in which she had been residing since 2017. His compassionate care and support are an exhibit of the wonderful mother Verna was.

A memorial service will be held at 2:30 pm Friday, January 29, 2021, at Pfeffer Funeral Home, 928 South 14th Street, Manitowoc, WI. Visitation will be from 2:00 pm until the time of service, with entombment at Knollwood Mausoleum. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Manitowoc Lakeshore Humane Society, Marine Toys for Tots, or a charity of your choice.
