Excerpt -- The funeral of Samuel Garner on last Sunday, Aug. 19, was a large one and testified to the esteem in which he was held by neighbors and friends. The services were held at the house and were conducted by Rev. Ross Ward of the Baptist church. Mr. Samuel Garner was born July 4, 1820, near Chidester's Mills, and died Aug. 18, 1900, at his home. He was 80 years, 1 month and 14 days old. His parents were William and Frances Roberts Garner. He married Rebecca Ridenour in 1841. Sixteen children were born to them, 4 boys and 5 girls are living. Mr. and Mrs. Garner lived a happy prosperous life until some four years ago, when his wife died. In 1883 he became a member of the Brethren Church (Dunkard) and lived consistent with his profession. He was successful in business, a substantial citizen, a good neighbor, and an exemplary Christian. The burial took place at the old Trowbridge graveyard on C. M. Bishop's place, near town, about six o'clock Sunday evening. The deceased was in his usual health up till an hour before his death, which took place about 5 o'clock last Saturday morning and was caused by dropsy of the heart. He was a father of John H. Garner, the merchant of this place
