GEORGE C. WAGNER
(1879 - 1942)

George C. Wagner, 63, prominent Francis Creek business man, died yesterday at the Holy Family hospital, where he had been a patient since Tuesday. Mr. Wagner had been in failing health the past year.

Funeral services will be held Monday at 8:45 a.m. from the Wagner home and at nine o'clock from the St. Ann Catholic church at Francis Creek, the Rev. Joseph Rauch officiating. Burial will be at Elm Grove in Waukesha county.

Mr. Wagner was born at Tisch Mills in 1879 and followed farming when a young man. In 1903 he married Miss Martha Carpenter and they moved to Milwaukee where he learned the butcher trade. In 1920 the Wagner's returned to this county. He purchased the Frank Stastny place at Francis Creek consisting of a butcher shop, tavern and dance hall.

For years Mr. Wagner enjoyed the distinction of holding the steer killing and dressing championship of Manitowoc and adjoining counties. His record of killing and dressing a steer in seven minutes still stands. Later he promoted many of these contests at Francis Creek and other places.

Mr. Wagner was a member of the Catholic Knights of Wisconsin and the Holy name society. Three years ago he retired from active ownership of the Francis Creek business, turning it over to his sons.

Mrs. Wagner died in 1938. In 1939 he married Emma Durand.

Survivors are the widow; three daughters, Mrs. Jacob Delsman, Mrs. Leonard Metz, of this city, Mrs. Elmer Reinders of Milwaukee; eight sons, Sidney, Arthur, Eugene and Alvin of Francis Creek, George and Joseph of Milwaukee, Chester of Denmark, Lee of Camp Devens, Mass.; four step sons, John, Lyman and Frank Durand of Park Falls, Wis., and Paul Durand of the state of Washington; step-daughter, Mrs. Vernon Hughes of Park Falls; and six grandchildren.
